Phil Mickelson’s back injury could be more serious than first thought.
Australia’s Stuart Appleby played the third round alongside the five-time Major winner and it is Mickelson’s comments to both he and fellow American John Merrick that suggest Mickelson’s oblique muscle concern may of more concern.
“He had hit a few poor shots but it was the first hole of our back nine when I really noticed there was something wrong, as he just didn’t look right,” said Appleby.

.
“He then came over to John (Merrick) and myself and said: “Look guys. I think something’s going on in my back and I’m out of here.
“He had been saying his back was fine but then we’re all getting to that age when these things start happening in our bodies.”
Appleby was also out of San Antonio having three-putted his final hole in a round of 74 for a five over par tally and join eight other players cut from the final round of the $US 6.2m event.
