Former Masters champ Fred Couples was left ‘gutted’ when he birdied his closing two holes to actually make the Dubai Desert Classic halfway cut.
The Seattle-born Couples had paid what is believed to have been three-times the $800 face value for two 50-yard line tickets for tomorrow’s Super Bowl XLVIII Seahawks and Broncos showdown in New Jersey.
And while Couples pocketed $25,000 for competing in Tuesday’s ‘Former Champions Challenge ‘ it didn’t ease his pain in being assured also of now playing all four rounds of the $US 2.5m event proper.
He said: “I have two 50-yard line seats and here I am standing here having birdied the last two holes, so you can call me stupid. Please call me stupid.

Fred Couples honoured at a Seahawks game at Quest Field and known affectionately as the ‘Hawks Nest’.
“I tried to bogey 16 and I did and I tried to bogey the par five, 13th but I just couldn’t butcher enough holes.
“So I am going to have to make money now selling the tickets.
“This would have been my first Super Bowl. I paid a lot of money for them and it’s my team playing.
“So I’m gutted.”
