Michael Phelps .. Learning Why Golf Is A Four Letter Word.

There’s no questioning the competitiveness of all-time Olympic gold medal winning Michael Phelps.

Phelps won a total of 22 medals in his illustrious swim career including 18 gold with 11 being in individual events.

However golf has become a newest challenge for the 28-year old, including playing in today’s (WED) Pro-Am at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland.

Phelps, an ambassador for Omega, is no stranger to the European Tour having two years played alongside England golfer, Paul Casey in the 2012 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.

The duo were joined that week by current 2014 European Ryder Cup captain, Paul McGinley and South African Oscar Pistorius, who was charged last Thursday with the murder of his girlfriend, Reev Steenkamp.

Phelps created enormous internet interest after he holed a monster 103-foot putt during the record round of the Pro-Amateur event at Kingsbarns.

Last October he joined the USA Ryder Cup team at Medinah in Chicago but left before the European Team’s surge to victory on Sunday.

“When I left we were still in the lead but it was pretty awful what then unfolded,” he said smiling.

“So I wasn’t there for the end but I had been talking to a lot of the guys at Medinah and it was a bit like the Olympics as it’s pretty special where a country can come together like that.

“It was great for me to being able to just watch how the members of both teams feed off the energy, and even though I am a bit biased I would have like to see the US team win.”

And Phelps, who played off a handicap of 23 in Switzerland, also revealed he’s lost none of his competitiveness indicating last week he posted his lowest-ever nine hole score of 41 strokes at the Caves Valley Country Club in his home town of Baltimore, Maryland.

“In a lot of sports I’ve played I’ve been able to pick up the sport fairly easily but golf is the only sport I have not been able to do that,” he said.

“I am just not as consistent I am playing golf as I am in other sports, so that is the challenge for me.”

“A lot of my friends have handicaps from plus three and all the way to eight but they just literally destroy me on the golf course and it’s very frustrating, so I am trying to catch them a little bit.

“Also a couple of them are yet to have a hole-in-one so I would like to be able have a hole-in-one before they do as that would really fire them up a little bit.”

And Phelps indicated also he would one day like to play a round of golf with 14-time Major winning, Tiger Woods.

“I would love to play with of the pros a bit more and Tiger’s someone who I would really love to play with, and if anything just to watch how he plays the game,” said Phelps.
