Seventeen years to the very day Adam Scott rose from the ashes of Greg Norman’s Augusta National anguish to capture one of the last sporting successes to deny a proud sporting nation – the Masters.
However many wondered if the heartbreak of Royal Lytham, where Scott bogeyed the last four holes to let slip a four-shot lead to hand the Claret Jug to Ernie Els, would ruin his psyche for future major runs.
But on that day in July last year, Scott boldly declared, “Next time, and I’m sure there will be a next time, I can do a better job of it.”
And on a damp and darkening Sunday afternoon at Augusta, Georgia Scott shone through to become Australia’s first Masters winner.
Hereunder is the reaction to his Augusta National success.
Greg Norman (Double British Open winner)
“I’m over the moon. Sitting there watching Adam, I had a tear in my eye. That’s what it was all about. It was Adam doing it for himself, and for the country.”
“I think he has the capability of winning a lot more majors. I want Adam to be the most successful golfer in Australian history.
“I’m very, very proud of him.”
Jason Day (Third In 2013 Masters)
“Everyone is so happy that Scotty won. I’m happy that he won, as well. Took us 77 Masters to get one. There was Greg in the past and a few other guys that have been close as well.
“Everyone is very, very happy for him. It’s hard to not be happy for the guy because he’s so nice. The only people that I’ve talked to is my mom and my sister. And a couple of other buddies, but they were just congratulating me on good playing. We just talked about how he played so well, how controlled he was. It was hard not to bet against him. Even when he walked off the 18th hole and I went and shook his hand, you could see it in his eyes, he was still in game mode.
“Adam was just so focused and he played to win the tournament, which that’s what you need to do. Once you start trying to defend that, that’s when you kind of go backwards. And he was out there playing to win. It was an exciting finish.”
Marc Leishman (Fourth In 2013 Masters)
“It’s awesome. There was a lot of interest back home with the Masters. Obviously with Scotty winning, but with a few of us having a chance to win. It’s exciting for the future of Australian golf. Hopefully we can all keep playing well and keep the excitement levels up.”
Ernie Els (2012 Open Champion)
“I’m really happy for him. Ever since Lytham, I’ve made a point of really getting on him a little bit, and keeping him going forward. We played a lot of golf and talked quite a bit. He really was motivated for it.
“Angel is another friend of mine. I’ve played a lot of Presidents Cups with Angel, both of them are friends of mine. Just for the fact of how things went down at Lytham, and for Scotty to win like that is really something.”
Julia Gillard (Australian Prime Minister)
“By any measure this is a historic day for Australian sport.”
“Huge congratulations to Adam Scott – the first Australian ever to win the Masters. Adam, Australia is incredibly proud of you.”
