‘Blubbering’ Bubba Watson turned on the water works when reliving the moment he realised the Masters green jacket was his to keep.
Watson, 34 welled-up and had to take a few seconds to compose himself during a press conference yesterday at Augusta National.
The American, who defeated South African Louis Oosthuizen at the first extra play-off hole, had broken down in tears in become the third left-handed to win among the Catheral in the Pines.
Watson had begun crying first in his mother’s arms and then in the arms of his very tall wife, Angie.
And now hours before last night’s (TUES) Champions Dinner, the new Florida-based golfer was shedding further tears.
Watson, who was at the front of the room seated beside Masters member, Claude Neilsen, had been asked from the floor what has been the best thing he’s done in the intervening 12 months since being fitted with a green jacket.
“My right here said (Nielsen), last year, he drove me from the 10th hole to Butler Cabin and I said: ‘Is this my green jacket, and I will probably cry again, but he said, yeah, that’s your green jacket that you’re taking home’”.
It’s at that moment Watson, in fact did start crying.
And wiping away the tears, Watson responded: “Thanks for bringing this up.
“But I told Claude that I was going to go home and wrap my young son Caleb up in it.
“But out of respect and honor for Augusta National, as one of greatest clubs we have, as one of greatest tournaments, out of respect for them, I didn’t do any of my funny antics that I normally would do.
Only thing I did was wrap Caleb up in it.”
Watson has been drawn to play the opening two rounds in the company of England’s Ian Poulter and US Amateur champion, Ian Fox.
Scotland’s Sandy Lyle has the honour of teeing off first at 8am local time while American Bill Haas will be out last in the final group at 1.52pm.
