Former US Open winner Michael Campbell’s return to form has earned him top billing in the player auction for a new golf teams event in India.
Campbell was one of 24 players under the hammer for the Pearl Golf Premier League, with eight franchises buying three players each for the three-day event at Aamby Valley golf course near Pune from February 7-10.

The competition has as a prize pot of $US 400,500 and a winner’s purse of $US 250,000. Teams will play three 14-hole rounds.
The Times of India reported that Campbell was picked up by Shubhkamna Eagles for $US 61,000, the highest bid of the auction. He will be joined by Sweden’s Daniel Chopra and Indian golfers Anirban Lahiri and Shamim Khan.
Two other Major winners in Darren Clarke and Angel Cabrera were both picked up for $52,ooo by Uttarakhand Lions and Maharashtra 59ers respectively.
Campbell has made a return to form recently, and is on track for a top 10 finish heading into the last round of the Abu Dhabi Championship.
He shot a three-under-par 69 on Saturday to take his score to seven under and leave him in a tie for eighth after three rounds of the European Tour event.
If he maintains his position, it will be Campbell’s third top 10 finish since mid 2012, continuing a return to form after a barren run following his US Open and World Matchplay Championship in 2005.
