Ireland’s Leona Maguire has been selected in theĀ anchor Sunday Singles role to helpĀ end a 16-year GB & I Curtis Cup winless drought.
Maguire will tee-up in Sunday’s final Singles match against USA rival Brooke Pancake, who is turning pro immediately after this week’s tournament at Nairn.
The 17-year old Maguire finally displayed her true form on day two of the competition braving the cold and wet conditions to team again with fellow Irish player, Stephanie Meadow to win the final match of the Saturday morning Foursomes.
Victory, after GB & I had lost the opening two matches, then set the tone for the afternoon Fourballs with GB & I rallying on the back of some vocal crowd support to win two matches and half the other.
Maguire was teamed with England’s Bronte Law and managed a half either side of victories by teamates Holly Clyburn and Kelly Tidy plus Pamela Pretswell and Meadow who won the last match 2 up.
It put GB & I just one point behind at 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 and now needing to win five of the eight Singles to win back the Curtis Cup for a first occasion since 1996.
“I was really happy with my play today as I managed to hole a good few putts and I’m hoping I can take that form into the Singles,” said Maguire.
“Our Fourball match seemed to swing in our favour when he went 1 up at the 13th and perhaps a draw was a good reflection of the match.
“We’ve also had some big crowds cheering for us and particularly this afternoon as they were getting right behind the matches and encouraging us on, and now looking for the same sort of support in the Singles.”
Maguire teed-up on Saturday with a poor Curtis Cup form of playing in six matches but only managing 1 1/2 points but now after the reverse Fourballs her record is 3 points from eight matches.
