Wood Returns To Qatar 13-Years On From His First Tour Win

This week’s 29th edition of the CB Qatar Masters is special for Englishman Chris Wood.

It marks the 13th anniversary of the then 25-year-old brilliantly eagled the 18th hole to secure a maiden DP World Tour victory, coming from behind to overhaul Sergio Garcia and George Coetzee, who finished a shot back.

Wood headed into the last day in Doha enjoying a three-shot lead over former U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell, Simon Khan and Alexander Noren after the third round.

Wood was then ranked 142nd in the world in landing his 200-yard second shot into the 72nd to just 12-feet ahead of calmly sinking the putt in a closing 69 for an 18-under-par tally, with Garcia and Coetzee who each birdied the last to finish joint runner-up behind Wood.

“Winning on the European Tour is not easy,” said Wood, who earned a victory in his 115th tour event.

“It was a nice way to finish. It feels good to pick up the trophy. I’ve been waiting patiently for my turn and fortunately it came today.”

The win was the first of three DP World Tour wins for Wood, including the 2016 BMW PGA Championship at Tour HQ in leafy Surrey.

The win earned Wood a place later that year in the European Ryder Cup team.

After a period of decline, including a brief retirement in 2023 and failure to qualify for the 2025 DP World Tour Wood qualified first by a remarkable six shots at the end of 2025 for the revamped MENA Tour.

Then in the second event Wood secured his first professional win in nine years at the tour’s second event at the Rolear Algarve Classic in Spain, and the last MENA Tour event of the year ahead of the Festive Season break.

Wood did not contest the first tournament of 2026, wishing to spend more time with his young family but then in his first event of the New Year Wood won in Cairo thus ensuring back-to-back victories.

As well, the win sent Wood back into No. 1 on the MENA Tour money list though he’s naturally missing this week’s event in Egypt to compete in Qatar where victory would see him secure a virtual three-year DP World Tour exemption.

A win would be a fabulous boost for one of the game’s nicest guys as well as the boost for Wood in returning to the DP World Tour as a recent back-to-back MENA Tour champion.

Wood tees-up this week among three former CB Qatar Masters former winners including 2019 winner Justin Harding and 2018 champion Eddie Pepperell.
