Jamieson Superbly Regroups To Share Lead In Windy Mauritius.

Scott Jamieson superbly muscled his way to a share of the lead, regrouping from a mid-round hiccup to post eight birdies in bright but testing, windy conditions on day one of the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open.

Jamieson had teed-off from the 10th hole and quickly raced to four-under thanks to four birdies over his opening five holes.

The Florida-based Scot stalled with a bogey at his sixth hole but regained that lost shot with a birdie at his ninth only to double the par-4 first hole that he was playing as his 10th.

Jamieson, now lying at two-under, stalled with three pars but then found the wind in his sails with three birdies over his closing holes for a five-under 67 on the host Heritage La Réserve Golf Links at Heritage Bel Ombre.

The round ended with Jamieson tied at the top with South African with Casey Jarvis and with poor light halting play for the day, and with 14 players still to complete their first rounds.

Jamieson is contesting a 403rd DP World Tour event and a second tournament of Jamieson’s 16th straight season.

Of course, one round does not make for a champion but it goes without saying Jamieson would dearly enjoy ending a 13-year winless drought since this month in 2012 when he captured still a maiden Tour title in the rain-shortened Nelson Mandela Championship in Durban.

Six players share third place at four-under including the South African threesome of Herman Loubser, Dylan Frittelli and Brandon Stone along with Frenchman Alexander Levy and Spaniard Manuel Eliva and American Ryan Gerard.

Frittelli, the 2017 champion, was over par until a spectacular finish with three birdies in succession from the fourth followed by an eagle at the eighth.

“The wind was howling and we had three rain squalls come through,” he said. “I was really happy to be under par today. But I’m also starting to learn this course.”

Levy, winner of five DP World Tour events in his career, lost his card last season but showed a glimpse of his best form in a round featuring seven birdies and three bogeys.

“It was tough, I played really good today,” he said. “I’m really pleased with my game, I worked very hard the last months so I’m pleased the hard work paid off, it’s nice.”
