After His Shock WD From The French, Fleetwood Hungry Looking Ahead.

It’s been a week today since Tommy Fleetwood’s shock withdrawal ahead of the third round of the FedEx Open de France due to a bout of food poisoning.

Fleetwood revealed it was a first time in his career the current World No. 9 had been forced to quit a tournament due to illness or injury.

“I’m back to feeling okay but looking back to last week, I’ve never had to withdraw from a touranment, so I was pretty guttered”, he said ahead of today’s third round in the Alfred Dunhill Links tournament here on the famed Old Course.

“I’ve always been pretty proud of the fact that I’ve never have been in that situation I was in last week in France.

“I do struggle a little bit with my gut, so much so that if there is a bug in the air or whatever it may be that could upset your stomach then I am pretty liable to catch it.

“I was just really unlucky to pick-up a stomach bug last week. I did make my way to the course last Saturday thinking I maybe be fine but I wasn’t”.

While admitting he’s back to good health, Fleetwood spoke of his delight in teeing-up this week in the 25th anniversary of Dunhill Links and still hungry for what lies in the future.

Fleetwood was competing on the now-named secondary Hotel Planner Tour when he received an invitation to contest the 2011 edition of the Dunhill Links, and with Dunhill chief Johann Rupert clearly identifying a golfing talent of the future.

Indeed, Fleetwood had won mid-2011 on the Euro Pro Tour ahead of capturing the Hotel Planner’s Kazakhstan Open, and while he missed the cut at the Dunhill his touranment is pretty impressive since them.

Fleetwood has since contested all 14 Dunhill Links events producing five top-10s and capped by second in both 2014 and 2018 while sharing third in 2024 and tied fifth in 2013 and 2019.

In fact, in those 14 straight showings, Fleetwood’s done everything but capture the gleaming trophy.

“Johann had been good enough for afford me an invitation back in 2011 when I was on the Challenge Tour and I have been very proud to have since competed every year”, he said.

“It’s just been so great to be competing up here in Scotland on three fabulous courses and meeting-up with so many great friends.

“The Old Course is always my favourite and having played a few Open Championship here at the Home of Golf is forever special, including a couple of years ago in going so close in finishing four.

“So, looking forward to finishing a few places higher up in next year’s Open.”

Fleetwood has achieved so much already in golf – 11 pro career wins, a member of three winning European Ryder Cup sides and eight top-5s at the game’s highest level.
