Golf’s Current Hottest Player On The Planet, One Round Shy Of Second Tour Win In Three Starts

Just a few week’s into a New Year and Patrick Reed continues to be the present hottest player on the planet.

A fortnight ago, Reed captured the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and then last Sunday he put himself into a play-off for the Bapco Energies Bahrain Championship.

The Texan is now just 18 holes shy of becoming the first American to win the Qatar Masters.

Reed has led the 29th hosting of the event since day one and he now enjoys a two-shot lead heading into the final round on the host Doha Golf Club course.

Reed’s birdies at the second and the par-five tenth were backed up by 16 pars in a rock-solid round and he said: “I felt like I hit the ball better today than I did the last two days – well, really compared to yesterday, and shot two shots worse, so it’s an interesting game.

“The golf game feels good, it feels solid, it feels steady and really just got to go out there and keep the foot on the gas tomorrow, get off to hopefully a faster start than today, and see where it goes.

“Hopefully we can continue to do that tomorrow, continue hitting the ball solid and giving ourselves a lot of birdie looks, and hopefully make a couple more than just two tomorrow.”

“I hit a good wedge in on ten after a poor drive. It’s not really the pin position where you want to be stuck with a wedge out the first cut, but hit a good one in there and rolled one in.

“That got me back to level and I kind of knew it wasn’t playing that easy so I knew I wasn’t in a terrible spot, just needed to get something going.”

Dane Jacob Skov Olesen signed for a 68 to be lying second at 12-under, one shot clear of the duo of Kiwi Kevin Hillier (71) and Spain’s Angel Ayora (70) sharing third place on 11-under.

Fellow Scot Calum Hill, and looking to heal the hurt of last week’s Bahrain play-off nightmare, grabbed seven birdies in a six-under 66 for a nine-under tally, five shots off the lead as he seeks a third Tour win.

Hill said: “It was good to be in that position last Saturday and Sunday.  I did a lot of things right but I did a couple of things wrong.

“It’s also hard to manage everything at your best when you haven’t regularly been in that position. You’re learning as you go.

“So, I feel I did really well and it will prepare for the next time I’m in that situation which is hopefully not that too far away”.
