Exclusive … Clarke Now Joins Fellow European Captains Calling For Donald To Remain As Adrare Manor Captain.

EXCLUSIVE ….

In a second exclusive Darren Clarke article we talked to the champion golfer regarding next year’s centenary anniversary hosting of the Ryder Cup, being staged for a second occasion on Irish soil at Adare Manor in Co. Limerick.

Clarke is the latest former European Ryder Cup captain GolfByTourMiss has spoken with, after Thomas Bjorn and Bernhard Langer, who also strongly recommends Luke Donald should choose to remain on board as 2027 European team captain.

Clarke competed in five Ryder Cup’s before being appointed non-playing European Captain for 2016 at Hazeltine and with Europe looking to win for a fourth straight occasion.

Sadly, Arnold Palmer had passed away six days ahead of the start of 2016 competition in Chask, Minnesota and with the PGA of America as Ryder Cup organisers, placing one of Arnie’s golf bags on the Hazeltine opening tee.

It was a moving gesture that prompted many fans on both sides to comment: “There’s no way the USA team is going to lose with Arnie’s golf bag there for inspiration on the first tee”.

Indeed, Davis Love 111s side won the opening four matches and from there were never headed, winning by six points at 17 – 11.

Donald is yet to confirm if he is prepared to remain as European captain and, if so, he will be a first three-peat European Captain since Bernard Gallacher 1991 to 1995.

Clarke said: “The decision who will captain Europe in 2027 can only be made by Luke.

“From a personal point of view, I think Luke has done an incredible job.  Having been a past captain as Thomas has, as Bernhard has along with other guys, I know how difficult it is.

“To see what an amazing job he has done both from the outside and from some people who were working in the background who I have been speaking to, Luke’s done an incredible job.

“So, would I like to see him be captain for Adare Manor, I would 100 per cent support him”.

Clarke was asked if he felt Donald could rest on his back-to-back victory laurels or is there a part of him that would so wish to captain a third victorious European side.

“That’s not a question for me to surmise or guess, as that is purely Luke’s decision”, Clarke said.

“What Luke has achieved in both Rome and at Bethpage Park was incredible.  If he wants to rest on what he has achieved then good on him!

“However, if he wants to go again then brilliant, good on him.

“So, from a European Ryder Cup corner I would like to see him go again”.

It had been mentioned by Bjorn that at now aged 48, Donald was at that period in his career where he’s simply treading water in competing on the DP World Tour for a few years shy of qualifying for the Champions Tour.

“Yes, that is true but then I am sure Luke and his wife, Dianna have had a really good talk about it many times already but whatever decision he makes will be the right decision for the Dunald family,” said Clarke.
