Top Scot Robert MacIntyre is out to win more American fans this week teeing-up at Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, just north of San Diego on the California coastline.
It will be MacIntyre’s maiden appearance in the Tiger Woods hosted event though it’s uncertain if Woods, after withdrawing from competing due to the passing of his mother, will still be in attendance at the $20m ‘Signature’ event.
Of course, the tournament is normally held at the Riviera course on the outskirts of Santa Monica in the greater Los Angeles area but with the PGA Tour acknowledging many calls to move the event out of respect following the enormous tragedy of the recent wildfires.
Indeed, the PGA Tour announced ahead of the event that main sponsor Genesis is donating $8 million in 100 tournament vehicles and cash contributions to California wildfire relief and rebuilding efforts.

The event will be missing two stars who tasted major championship success at Torres Pines and those Woods in capturing the US Open in 2008 and Jon Rahm who joined Woods in winning the 2021 US Open on the South Course.
While Woods and the LIV attached Rahm will be missing competing 46 of the world’s top-50 will be competing, and with MacIntyre moving to his career high of No. 14 following his share of sixth last week at the Phoenix Open
MacIntyre made his Phoenix debut a year ago but virtually went unnoticed in missing the cut though it was a vastly different Scot last week despite his disappointing final round back nine, when he got himself into a share of second with a 12th hole birdie but just burned the hole so many times after that.
Though MacIntyre clearly enjoyed himself at the famed 16th and also endearing himself to fans with his ‘Bobby Bomb’ gift packs of a Oban Celtic Shinty shirt and a $20 bill that he tossed to fans over the four days. And he confirmed that joy going onto his ‘X’ page following the event won by good friend and his Zurich Classic of New Orleans partner, Thomas Detry of Belgium
MacIntyre said: “Magic week @WMPhoenixOpen, played some really solid golf overall. The fans…can’t thank you enough for getting involved on 16 with the @ObanCelticSc tops. Sorry I didn’t bring any birdies for you.
“Lastly, massive congrats to my partner @tomdetry, impressive all week”.
MacIntyre also ventured into the stands at the stadium-like 16th to mix with fans who warmly responded to the Scot having pics taken with the double Tour winner.
The Scot was well up for it last week and with his social media fan base growing with every tournament. He now has 85.5K ‘X’ followers, 123K on Instagram, 21.6K on TikTok and 14K on Facebook.
There’ll be none of that nor the beer can throwing should any player land an ace at Torrey Pines with fans not as ‘wild’ as the Phoenix counterparts.
As well, this year’s Genesis Invitational is, as highlighted above, is going ahead at an alternate venue out to respect those who not only died or lost homes/property/possessions in the LA fires but to honour those who fought the various blazes.
Of course, MacInytre’s a two-time PGA Tour winner but is yet to win on US soil and that will be the goal again this week and before he returns home in the second of July.
MacIntyre, and who finished T35th in the 2021 US Open at Torrey Pines, will contest the opening two rounds this week, starting from the 10th tee with 2023 Ryder Cup European team winning colleague, Sepp Straka and American and Sahith Theegala as partners.
The trio will be out two groups ahead of Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Viktor Hovland.
