Connor Syme will look for an even shorter route teeing-up in tomorrow’s (TUES) inaugural Kenya Savannah Classic in Nairobi.
Syme secured an equal Tour best finish of third in Sunday’s concluding Magical Kenyan Open and now after just a day’s break it will be back out on the same Karen Country Club course.
This inaugural event, and being run from Tuesday to Friday, is being staged as part of a ‘Kenyan Swing’ and with Syme joining nine Tartan colleagues who competed last year remaining in the Kenyan capital.
Syme said: “It’s something we’ve done a few times now with the European Tour and I’ve loved every one of them.
“We had back-to-back events in Wales last year and also Cyprus, so it’s a great thing the tour is doing, to be honest. It keeps our travel a bit more limited and this is a fun golf course.
“So, we’ve got one day off and then back on it so I’m looking forward to getting back on it. It’s one of those courses you don’t really tire of playing. You can play it so many different ways and it should be a fun week again”.
Syme, 25, muscled his way through the field to post a 64 and superbly snare third place.
It was the Scot’s lowest score in seven months since a career best 63 on route to his then best Tour effort of third at the Celtic Classic.
Now Syme’s primed to do it all again and thanks to recent work with his father, Stuart, who owns and runs the Drumoig Golf Centre just outside of St. Andrews.
Syme said: “I’ve been working really, really hard over the last four weeks with my dad Stuart at home on my putting. Phil Kenyon’s also been helping me out a bit as well as Mike (Rae) at my dad’s range, so I’m chuffed to see that come to fruition last week.
“The 64 was just a shot more than more than my 63 at Celtic Manor, so it bodes well for next week.
“What will be interesting is how they will set the course up as it might be a little different next week, but either way it will be a fun week.
“It’s challenging at altitude, to be honest. My caddie Ryan (McGuigan) did a good job this week in getting my numbers down and a real trick of this golf course is how far the ball goes.”
Joining this week’s field after missing out last week is Kingsbarns Links Daniel Young and Borders Craig Howie.
