Regnum Caya, Belek, Turkey …
No longer says former Masters champion Danny Willett is he golf’s ‘Humpty Dumpty’ and enjoying being in contention injury-free.
Willett has presented himself with the best chance of ending well over a two-year winless drought after moving into a share of second place on day two of the Turkish Airlines Open in Belek
The 31-year old father of two produced a second round 65 to move to 10-under par and only two shots adrift of fellow Englishman Justin Rose, who signed for a second straight 65 and head the $7m event on 12-under par.
Since winning the surprise of capturing the 2016 Masters Willett has suffered not only a downturn in form but a nagging back injury so much so, he has slipped from ninth in the world in winning at Augusta National to be the now No. 322 ranked golfer.
“I can get up and I can have 16-hour days if I want,” he said.
“I can’t because I have two kids but the body is able to if I want to. I am now up early and in gym for an hour every morning, then hitting balls, then playing and you go and finish after.
“It’s more the fact energy levels are high at the end of day because the body is not knackered from playing 18 holes and that was case.
“It was like I was Humpty Dumpty every time I finished playing as you had to put me back together again, rest up and try go again.
“So, it’s nice I can put more time in and work more. It’s a game of practice. The more practice the better chance you give yourself.
“The practice has been allowed to be ramped up, the gym stuff a bit more, and all that does is ingrain the movements I’m trying to make a bit quicker.”
