Atlanta, GA ….
World No. 1 Justin Rose has praised the efforts of fellow Englishman Oliver Fisher indicating it was just a matter of time when a first 59 would happen on the European Tour.
Rose said he first was not aware of Fisher’s historic accomplishment on day two of the Portugal Masters until he began receiving text messages via a special European Ryder Cup Team mobile phone ‘Group Chat’.
“It’s cool and all congratulations to Oli and I woke-up here in Atlanta and all the boys were talking about it, so I flicked on the Golf Channel and watched him hit his second shot into the last and two putt for the Tour’s first 59”, said Rose ahead of teeing-up on day two of the Tour Championship in Atlanta.

“As I said, it was really cool and could have easily been a 58 so I give Oli a 58 ½ as his first putt was a great putt (smiling)
“A 59 was always going to happen and I am surprised, given it has happened eight times on the PGA and Jim Furyk has shot a 58 along being one of those to shoot a 59, why it has taken this long.
“The European Tour can play some short courses but I am so pleased for Oli he was able to do it and he’s a lad who is very popular on Tour and we’re all very happy for him and the Tour.
“It would nice now if he can go on to win the Portugal Masters as they would be the extra icing on the 59 cake.”
And while delighted for his compatriot Rose would not go as far to say the Tour’s first 59 would be a lift for the European Team.
“Totally unrelated but yes, great for Oli and the Tour,” said Rose smiling.
