Jason Day Set To Break Boyhood Hero Greg Norman’s 36-Hole Players Mark.

World No. 1 Jason Day still has four holes to break the 36-hole low mark of boyhood hero Greg Norman in moving to 14-under par through two rounds of the Players Championship.

Day’s opening round of a nine under par 63 matched the effort of Norman at the 1994 Players while Day’s second day achievement of moving to 14-under par through 14 holes has already matched a Norman’s 36-hole mark also in 1994.

Play will resume at 9.15am local time and with Day heading out to the 15th hole where he has 107-yards to the flag.

“I’m at 14-under par, I’ve got a good lead going on, I just can’t sit back,” Day said.

“I need to keep pushing forward. And the moment that I lose a little bit of focus and make a few mental errors and mistakes, that’s when I let the field back in. And I just can’t afford to do that.”Norman set the 36-hole record of 14-under 130 on route to victory 22-years ago at TPC Sawgrass and in a victory where he had just one bogey over the 72 holes of the Stadium Course.

Fellow Queensland-born Day looks just as good and has yet to drop a shot over the 32 holes he has played. He ended his day with a 40-foot birdie putt down the slope at No. 13 and the 5-iron for his tap-in birdie at the 14th.

“Hopefully, I can hit some good, solid shots coming in and at least try to get a couple more birdies,” Day said.

Ireland’s Shane Lowry posted a 68 to enjoy the clubhouse lead at 11-under par.

Lowry, who had set a new Sawgrass back nine low of 29 on Thursday, played a poor wedge shot that didn’t reach reach the island green at the par-3 17th to escape with a bogey before brilliantly holing a wedge from about 180 yards on the 18th hole fr eagle.

“I thought I’d be booking a plane ticket now, how I was feeling on Wednesday,” said Lowry. “Yeah, golf is a funny game. Sometimes low expectations brings good results and high expectations brings no results.”

Germany’s Alex Cejka and Sweden’s Jonas Blixt, each with a pair of 67s, are at 10-under, along with American Cameron Tringale (69).
