Rookie Gavin Moynihan tees up in this week’s Italian Open, and his first event as a pro, with the endorsement of Ryder Cup Captain’s Paul McGinley and Darren Clarke ringing his ears.
Moynihan, 20 has been afforded an invitation to contest the event on the Milano GC course laid out right alongside the famed Monza Autodrome and venue for last fortnight’s Italian F1 Grand Prix.
The Island Club attached Moynihan arrived at Monza on the back of helping steer GB & I to a record-setting Walker Cup success last Sunday.

McGinley had been present at Royal Lytham and St. Annes helping motivate the GB & I team and delighted in again in catching-up with Moynihan ahead of making his ‘play for pay’ debut.
“I enjoyed being around the GB & I team last week as there is an innocence and there’s a rawness about them but there was also a lot of ambition,” said McGinley.
“And that ambition extended past last week’s Walker Cup as we see this week with Gavin playing his first pro event here in Italy.
“So my advice to Gavin has been simple, and it’s just get better at what you do and keep improving your game and try to be something you’re not.
“Turning professional is not just about golf as it’s a whole change in lifestyle as he’s going to be playing for a living and will have to get used to travelling the world.
“But then helping Gavin is the fact top-level amateur golf is nowadays so similar to the pro golf and he’s got a lot of experience playing Irish Open’s and big events like last week’s Walker Cup.
“So my advice is to keep things simple and don’t try to look for that extra 5% because in looking for that extra 5% you can loose 20%.”

Clarke played a practice round on Tuesday in the company of Moynihan and with the current European Team Captain doubly proud as Moynihan has been a part of Clarke’s Foundation for the past few years.
“Gavin is a great young man and he’s got a very sensible head of his shoulders,” said Clarke.
“He’s coming off a great victory last week and he knows exactly what he’s trying to do and with Chubby looking after him and directing him, he’ll be fine.
“But what any young kid like Gavin will find when they first start out is that the pros don’t always play great but from 100-yards and in, that’s why they’re professionals.
“And that’s what he’ll learn is that even if they are having a bad day, the pros can still make a score.”
Moynihan wound up his preparations playing nine holes yesterday (WED) in the company of Peter Lawrie and Damien McGrane while he and Kevin Phelan were seen chatting on the practice putting green.
And triple Major winning Padraig Harrington has been afforded advice ahead of a guest commentary spot with SKY Sports on Friday afternoon.
“Knowing what a good talker Padraig is we’ve had to say to him we do need to go off the air at some point,” said a SKY Sports staffer smiling.
