Tiger Woods will need to make some big noise in what he describes as the ‘small town atomsphere’ ahead of making his first appearance in this week’s Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Scotland’s Sandy Lyle is a former two-time winner of the event yet Woods has never contested the event that has also been won in the past and eight-times by legendary Sam Snead.
Woods, who has slumped to 284th on the World Rankings, is not only desperate to win for a first time in over two years but needs to capture what would be an 80th PGA Tour victory if he’s to qualify for the lucrative Play-Off Series.
But if the crowd that walked with Woods during today’s Pro-Am on a water-logged Sedgefield course is any indication then they could easily carry the 14-time Major winner to glory.
“It’s kind of fun being here and very much like a small town atmosphere,” said Woods.
“The people come out and support the event for years and Davis (Love 111) who I played with on Tuesday says he’s played this event for years and even sees the same people each and every year in the same spots.
“But by deciding to play here I wanted to see, first of all, how my body was going to be feeling after grinding it out trying to play Whistling Straits, practicing over the weekend, and seeing how everything felt and if I was ready to then make a push and get myself into the Play Offs.”
Also competing in Greensboro for a first time is England’s Luke Donald who three years ago was ranked No. 1 in the world.
