Rory McIlroy & Padraig Harrington Praise Leona Maguire – New Women’s Amateur World No. 1

Golf’s leading ranked Rory McIlroy was singing the praise of Leona Maguire and the first Irish-born women’s amateur World No. 1.

McIlroy hasn’t had the pleasure of meeting Maguire and the 20-year Slieve Russell sensation but he’s admired her career and with the Duke University freshman moving to the top of the rankings in capturing a third NCAA title.

“Leona becoming the Number One ranked ladies amateur is a fantastic achievement and though I have not met her or spent that much time with Leona or her sister Lisa I’ve always been aware of  their accomplishments,” said McIlroy heading into the opening round of the Wells Fargo Championship.

“So it’s great for Leona and it’s another plus for the strength of Irish golf.”

Also singling out Maguire was triple Major winning Padraig Harrington and after needing just 25 putts in a Quail Hollow opening score of a two under par 70.

“Woh! That’s phenomenal news, and on  top of having to put herself through an education, as well,” said Harrington.

“I’ve met her and it’s a tremendous achievement on her part so many congratulations to Leona.”
