Shane Lowry celebrated his opening Masters round in being led off for a drugs test.
No sooner had Lowry posted a three over par 75 and an official was all over him in leading him away to provide a urine sample.
Lowry’s round was a topsy turvy effort of four birdies but also two bogeys and two double bogeys.
It left the Carton House pro sharing 69th place in the 97-man field but trailing 11 shots behind tearway Texas-born Jordan Spieth.
The 21-year old Spieth, winner late last year of the Australian Open and the following week’s Hero World Challenge, went within one shot of matching the Augusta National course record.
Lowry had been waiting well over four months since his Augusta, GA postmarked invitation arrived around New Year.
However the beared Irish-born pro didn’t count on such an emotional ride around the Alister MacKenzie designed gem.
“I had a lot of chances out there today and I feel as though if I can go out there in the morning and shoot something like a 69 I’ll be okay,” he said.
“I struggled a bit with the driver as I have that low snap‐hook in my bag at the minute, and it comes out ‐‐ it’s been coming out every now and then, the two holes you really don’t want it on.
“You get away with it on most holes. You hit it on the first, you probably make bogey but you get away with it. But the two holes you couldn’t really hit it on, I hit it on today.
“Like I said, my goal now is to make the halfway cut and try and get four rounds around here.”
And after nearly five hours on the course Lowry was asked if he felt mentally or physically drained.
“No, not at all. It was just a bit of a roller coaster round for me.”
However after providing a ‘sample’ Lowry was spotted under the ‘Celebration Tree’ in front of the stately Augusta National clubhouse with his arm around his future wife, Wendy and enjoying a cup of ice-cold Coca Cola.
