Jordan Speith Joins Nicklaus, Watson, Palmer & Sarazen In Winning 2014 Australian Open.

Jordan Spieth has joined some of his more illustrious USA born compatriots in storming to victory in the Emirates Australian Open in Sydney.

The 21-year old Texan ran away with the Stonehaven Trophy winning by a remarkable six shot success with a new course record of an eight under par 63 on the Australian Club course.

Spieth won with an impressive 13-under par total from the Australian trio of Rod Pampling (68) who was in second place on seven under par, Brett Rumford (70) on six under par and former double Australian Open winner Greg Chalmers (71) in fourth spot on five under par.

Pampling, Rumford and Chalmers earn a place in next year’s Open Championship on the Old Course at St. Andrews.

On a first visit to Australia Spieth becomes the 10th American born winner of Australia’s premier event and many of those being greats of the game.

Former Stars and Stripes winners include:- Jack Nicklaus (1964, 1968, 1971, 1975, 1976 and 1978), Arnold Palmer (1966), Tom Watson (1984) and Gene Sarazen (1936).

And other American winners of Australia’s national open include:  J C Snead (1973), Bill Rogers (1981), Mark Calcavecchia (1988), John Morse (1990) and Brad Faxon (1993).

Here’s a stat for you and it was in 1993 when Faxon, and the last American to win the Australian Open, that Spieth was born.

Spieth’s victory is the largest since Greg Norman stormed to an eight shot victory in the 1996 Australian Open and also at the Australian Club.

And when Nicklaus captured the sixth and last of his Australian Open wins in 1978, and also at the Australian  Club, he defeated fellow American Ben Crenshaw by six shots.

“That was definitely the best round I’ve ever played,” said Spieth.

“At the start I didn’t think such a round was out there, but the putts kept going in. It was an awesome experience.

“And I will definitely be back next year to defend.  I just loved being here in Sydney this week.
