Bjorn, 43 grabbed an eagle and seven birdies on the West Course to end the day two shots clear of Ireland’s Shane Lowry (64) and on a day play was halted on two occasions of a total of an hour and 45 minutes in the European Tour’s flagship event during to the threat of lightning.

It is the third occasion also in Bjorn’s 21-year European Tour career he’s shot a round of 62 and in the 434 tournaments Bjorn has contested he described today’s effort as the best ever.

Also it is Bjorn’s lowest BMW PGA course by four shots after posting a prior best of 66 in the 2004 event.

“This is my best one, absolutely,” he said.

“On this golf course, you shoot great rounds of golf in your career, but to shoot 62 on this golf course, you can’t ask for much more.”

Bjorn is contesting the event for a 17th occasion in his career with his best finish being a share of fifth in 1988 and comes after his missed the cut in last week’s Spanish Open with scores of 75 and 78.

“Last week was awful, and I was starting to feel a bit frustrated with things, and to be honest in practice, it hasn’t been great, either,” he said.

“So to go out on this golf course of all places and play like I did today is a little bit surprising.

“But then I haven’t had the best record here.  I haven’t had the best round here.  It’s been a long time since I’ve actually had any sort of result on this golf course.  It’s not a place when I come in here, I think, oh, this is going to be a great week but I guess I’ve got to start sticking my head down for the rest of the week now and try and focus on what’s ahead.

“So to shoot a number like this, it certainly gives you a good start to the week.”
