Sergio Garcia In Doubt For U.S. Open With Knee Injury.

Spain’s Sergio Garcia is in serious doubt for next month’s U.S. Open after withdrawing injured following his first round in the BMW PGA Championship.

Garcia struggled over his closing few holes in shooting a one over par 73 on the West Course at Wentworth and then advising officials he was unable to continue due to an injured knee.

The current World No. 7 first felt pain in his left knee during the final round of last week’s Spanish Open where he battled his way to score of 76 and a share of 38th place.

Garcia then underwent an MRI on his knee on Monday but later advised there was no serious damage to his knee other than a build up of fluid.

“Unfortunately it is the same thing that happened on Sunday at the Spanish Open even as it felt better, I guess from resting it Monday and Tuesday,” he said.

“It felt okay yesterday but walking on it and going up and down the hills here at Wentworth it’s just been pinching more than anything.

“I was advised I have an edema on the kneecap. So I guess it just tightens up as I go.

“I’ll go to the physio back in Spain and see what he says. I’m sure I’m going to have to take some antiinflammatories. I don’t know, probably have to do a little bit of work on it I’m guessing, but we’ll see. But I don’t know exactly.

“But on the 17th and 18th holes today, it didn’t feel good at all.

“The problem is now is with the U.S. Open coming up.  I don’t want it to get worse.”

Garcia was intending not to compete again to the June 5th commencing U.S. Open at Pinehurst in North Carolina.

Garcia has competed in every U.S. Open since making his debut in 2000 and with his best finish sharing third place in 2005 behind New Zealand’s Michael Campbell at Pinehurst.
