Ten years on and American Shaun Micheel has relived ‘that shot’ he hit on Sunday August 17th, 2003, and the shot that helped him win the PGA Championship and the last occasion the championship was staged at Oak Hill.
Micheel was ranked 169th in the world at the time to become one of the biggest long shots to ever win one of golf’s four majors.
Micheel got his first look at Oak Hill in near a decade on Sunday when he played a practice round in the company of fellow PGA champion, Padraig Harrington of Ireland.
But then when Micheel came to the 497-yard par four, 18th memories of his 7-iron shot second shot came flooding back.
Micheel had 175-yards to the flag and he struck the ball so well that it landed just two inches from the uphill green.
The birdie secured Micheel the Rodman Wanamaker trophy by two shots over fellow American Chad Campbell.
Since that shot Oak Hill had installed a plaque on the spot where the now 44-year old Micheel hit the sweetest 7-iron of his career.
“I kind of felt like an animal in the zoo today because everybody kind of kept waiting for me to get to 18 and see what I was able to do,” he said.
“But it’s nice to be back. I’m not 44 years old and I’m definitely heading towards that valley in my career. I want to do well this week, but it’s a very difficult golf course.
“So maybe people won’t expect too much of me this week, which is fine by me.”
The Memphis-based Micheel has a lifetime exemption for winning the PGA Championship and will play the first two rounds in the company of fellow PGA winners Rich Beem (2002) and Mark Brooks (1996).
