Official – Rodman Wanamaker Trophy Holds 43 Beers & A Dog.

It’s official!  The gleaming Rodman Wanamaker Trophy holds 43 beers and a dog.

That’s according to new PGA Champion Jason Dufner.

If correct, and no one’s to doubt golf’s newest Major Champion, that’s more than the US Open and Claret Jug combined.

The Rodman Wanamaker Trophy stands 27 inches tall and that’s seven-and-a-half inches higher than the Claret Jug.

Ernie Els is known to have had the Claret Jug spilling over with beer after his first Open Championship win in 2002 at Muirfield while McIlroy drank beer out of the US Open trophy in the hours following his success in 2011 at Congressional.

And the Claret Jug must have taken a hammering judging by 2011 Open Champion, Darren Clarke’s look the day after his Royal St. George’s success.

Dufner had lost the PGA Championship that same year in a play-off to fellow American Keegan Bradley, but it seemed everyone was delighted when the bashful Dufner won a fortnight ago at Oak Hill.

And Dufner, as it is seemingly natural these days for a Major Champion, did the rounds of the New York TV and radio shows after his Rochester victory and it was during a visit to the Howard Stern Show following his two shot victory over fellow American Jim Furyk.

Among other revelations from the “Dufnering” man himself was the little-known factoid the Wanamaker Trophy holds 43 beers and the universally acknowledged opinion that South African-born Rory Sabbatini was the least liked golfer on tour and fortunate to make his living in a non-contact sport.

“Guys are just jerks sometimes, you know?” said Dufner.

“Most of the time nothing plays out, because golfers are pretty soft. But I’ve seen guys do stuff that if it happened in an NFL or NBA locker room, there’d be fists thrown,” Hennessey quoted Dufner as saying. “He [Sabbatini] just rubs everyone the wrong way.”

And Dufner’s still being asked to comment about the affectionate pat he gave his wife Amanda as he left Oak Hill’s 18th green a fortnight ago.

“Yeah,” Dufner said, “I grabbed her butt.”
