Padraig Harrington Pulls Plug On European Tour Flagship Event.

Triple Major winning Padraig Harrington will disappoint Tour officials with a decision not to contest this week’s flagship PGA Championship at Wentworth.

Harrington’s never been a fan of the famed West Course as evident in missing the halfway cut last year by 10 shots.

In fact, Harrington has played the event just five times in the last 10 years.

Guy Kinnings, Head of Golf at IMG and the company that manages Harrington, said:  “Padraig withdrew because having played three weeks in a row he feels a week off was better for his game then a fourth consecutive event.”

Harrington’s absence reduces the number of Major Champions to nine in the Euro 4.75m ($US 6.1m) tournament headed by World No. 2 Rory McIlroy.

And McIlroy is assured a media interrogation ahead of the event after confirmation he is to split with the Dublin-based Horizon Sports Management.

At time of putting this story on the website, neither McIlroy, who is expected to manage his own business affairs, or Horizon CEO, Conor Ridge have issued a formal statement on the split but it was confirmed earlier this week by McIlroy’s close friend, Graeme McDowell while competing in Bulgaria.
