Jason Duffner Calls For More Player Input Into USA Ryder Cup Captaincy Selection

American Ryder Cup star, Jason Duffner has called for more player input into the selection of the USA Ryder captain.

Duffner has got a first hand glimpse of the role of the European Tour players into choosing a new European Team captain having played nine holes alongside new 2014 European Team captain, Paul McGinley in a practice round on Tuesday.

Duffner is on a first visit to the Middle East and will also contest next week’s Commercial Bank Qatar Masters in Doha.

“It would be nice from a players perspective and if you asked most players they would want to be involved in the process a little bit more,” he said.

“But then it is set up a little differently in the States and I’ve seen this year in Europe there was a lot of influence from the players, and the top players spoke  and pushed for Paul to be the captain and that speaks volumes on how the team is going to come together.

“So it would be nice if the players did have a little more input.

“But it would be a tough decision whoever is involved in the selection process as who’s to say who you should pick as there is always worthy guys who should be candidates but as players is kind of our responsibility to rally around the PGA of America, and rally behind whoever they select and support that decision.”

The PGA of America overlooked 2014 candidates Larry Nelson and David Toms and appointed eight-time Major winning Tom Watson as the 2014 USA Gleneagles captain.

Watson last captained the USA Team in 1993 at The Belfry where his team won by two points over Bernhard Gallacher led Europeans.

And in that year Watson was the last American captain to win a Ryder Cup outside of the States.
