Sergio Garcia Continues Ryder Cup Feel Good Factor Shooting 61 To Win Johor Open

Spain’s Sergio Garcia created Asian Tour history and contined the post Ryder Cup feel good factor becoming the seventh winning Medinah Miracle worker in capturing the rain-shortened Johor Open.

Garcia posted a blistering third and final round 11-under par 61 for a three-stroke victory in the Asian Tour’s season-ending event.

Garcia, 32 finished with a 54-hole 18-under par tally on the Horizon Hills for his second victory of the year and his 24th international title. He also won the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship in August.

Garcia produced the  lowest final round by a winner in Asian Tour history when he birdied seven of the first nine holes to make the turn in seven-under 29 before adding birdies on 13 and 14.

There was a further rain delay before Garcia returned to make it four more birdies in succession from the 13th hole and then parring his closing two holes.

However the Spaniard’s score will not count officially due to a preferred lie rule in effect.

Garcia’s win continues an amazing run of success for Jose Maria Olazabal’s victorious Ryder Cup winning side starting with Justin Rose capturing the Turkish Airlines World Golf Final and followed with victories by Peter Hanson (BMW Masters), Ian Poulter (HSBC Champions), Rory McIlroy (DP World Tour Championship, Dubai), Martin Kaymer (Nedbank Golf Challenge) and Graeme McDowell (World Golf Challenge).

“It has been a long week obviously because of the weather and I couldn’t have asked for a better way to end the week. It has been a great experience as this is my first time in Malaysia and to be able to win is a treat,” said Garcia.
“The most important thing about playing under these kinds of conditions is to keep the momentum going especially with so much disruption. It’s hard to keep up mentally and I sort of did that yesterday morning where I finished poorly. But today, I came back strongly.I played very solid in my front-nine and made four in a row in the back-nine to give myself a nice solid lead going into the last two holes,” said Garcia.

American Jonathan Moore also shot a 61 to finish second with Thailand’s Thongchai Jaidee was third at 14 under after a 65.

Thailand’s Thaworn Wiratchant won the Asian Tour money title by shooting a last day 65 to tie for fifth at 11 under.

Double Major winning John Daly also posted a final round 65 to grab a share of 15th place on 8-under par while four-time Major winner, Ernie Els closed with a 72 to tie for 48th at three under par.
