If Europe is going to retain the Ryder Cup they are going to have to do it without the support of partners.
Just eight of the dozen Europeans will arrive in Medinah tomorrow with a wife or partner.
Heading those flying solo to Chicago will be World No. 1 Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy’s girlfriend, Caroline Wozinacki will be competing in the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Japan and coming off her victory in the Korean Open.
And Wozinacki is probably delighted she has a tournament to contest as the Dane would seemingly not take having to play the ‘wives bit’ while in Chicago.
Also travelling to Medinah without a partner is Spain’s Sergio Garcia, Germany’s Martin Kaymer and Belgium rookie Nicolas Colsaerts.
European Team captain, Jose Maria Olazabal also will again be arriving without female companionship.
Just one member of the Team USA will walk out for the Opening Ceremony without a partner and that will be 14-time Major winning, Tiger Woods.
It will be the second straight Ryder Cup Woods will not have a female companion.
As well, Fred Couples, and of four USA vice-captains, will not be accompanied by a wife or partner.
Team Europe heads out tomorrow morning on a special Virgin Airlines charter flight to Chicago but with just three team members aboard – Paul Lawrie, Francesco Molinari and Colsaerts.
However the flight will be full as also on board with be a host of officials and supporters for this week’s 39th edition of the Ryder Cup.
