Shane Lowry’s Irish Open winning trophy is safe despite burglars severely ransacking his parent’s home late last week.
While delighted his prize item of crystal remains in his possession, the 2009 Irish Open winner is disappointed his collection of boyhood and teenage trophies were stolen in the raid in Co. Offaly.
But then Lowry said he was more upset for his mother who returned home around 10.30pm from her work to find the house so severely damaged.
“My mum just prided herself so much with the appearance of the house and I felt so sad that when she arrived home, she found the house in the state it was in,” said Lowry.
“In the 25-years I have been living in the house there has never been one thing out of place, so for her to arrive home by herself and to see the house in its ransacked condition was very tough for her.
“It happened at 9pm in the evening and she got home from work about 10.30pm while my dad was just having a pint downtown.
“We’re lucky also as my little brother was also out at the time and I would hate to imagine if he arrived home to find the thieves were still in the house.”
Lowry was not aware of the break-in to after he had completed Friday’s second round of the Omega European Masters in Switzerland.
However in turning on his phone he got a tweet from a friend expressing sympathy over the break-in.
“The tweet left a link and here were these stories on the internet so I rang my dad straightaway and he filled me in,” said Lowry.
But while Lowry’s Irish Open winning trophy was not stolen, all his boyhood trophies were snatched.
“There’s nothing I can do now about those trophies but I would have been really upset to lose the Irish Open trophy.
“Sure, it could be replaced but it would just not be the same looking at a replacement.”
Lowry was speaking at the close of the Omega European Masters and an event he played all four rounds for the first time in four appearances.
