Former Open champ Louis Oosthuizen was lucky to escape serious injury this morning following a car accident in Akron, Ohio.
Oosthuizen, winner of last year’s 150th Open at St. Andrews, was a passenger in the back seat of a car being driven by his caddy.
The two were less than 200 yards from Oosthuizen’s hotel and headed for the Firestone Country Club course, and venue for this week’s $US 8.5m WGC – Bridgestone Invitational when another vehicle failed to stop at a Stop sign and slammed into the car carrying the South African.
Oosthuizen’s caddy were conveyed to a nearby hospital while Oosthuizen suffered severe whiplash.
The two vehicles were later written off.
Oosthuizen did not attend the course and instead returned to his hotel to rest.
And as Ian Garbutt, who works with Oosthuizen’s International Sports Management company explained: “Louis and his caddy were extremely lucky as in another split second the car would have t-boned their car square on.

“As it is, the other driver hit the front portion of Louis’ caddy car.”
Oosthuizen is confident he will be fit enough to take his place in Thursday’s starting event.
Organisers have drawn the Major winner alongside Australia’s Aaron Baddeley for the first day of the ‘no cut’ event.
