Pensioner Banned For Two Years After Crashing Into Monty

An old age pensioner has been banned from driving for two years after crashing his van last October into a car being driven by Colin Montgomerie.

Monty was driving his flash 750 BMW, registration number 1 CSM, along the A80 and one of Glasgow’s busiest roads, when 74-year old William Fleming got confused by roadworks and ended up on the wrong side of the road in a contraflow.

Pensioner receives two-year ban for smashing into Monty's car last October.

The victorious European Ryder Cup captain’s car spun twice and was lucky not to be hit by an on-coming lorry.  Monty was also fortunate not have sustained serious injury in the crash that saw the right rear wheel of the £70,000 silver BMW virutally ripped off.

A second car was also hit by Fleming’s car but did not sustain near the damage as the one driven by Monty.

The accident occured as Monty was driving to visit his father and just three weeks after Monty led Europe to victory in the Ryder Cup in Wales.

And there had been no shortage of people running to assist Monty out of his wrecked car as he was easily recognised by all those stopped on the roadway due to the accident.

A rescue helicopter landed beside the motorway but Monty ignored suggestions he be flown to hospital.

However the 47-year old Monty did suffer severe bruising down his right side and admits to still having flashbacks to the crash.

Fleming, a former lorry driver, from Tweechar in Lanarkshire, denied the offence in a hearing earlier this year but returned to Airdie Sheriff Court to plead guilty to dangerous driving.

As well as the two-year ban, Fleming was slapped with a £400 fine and told he must resit his driving test once the suspension ends.

Fleming’s defence lawyer said wished to apologise to Monty and all concerned for the trouble he had caused.

Fleming said: “I only realised who it was involved after the crash happened. He had got out of the car before I got to him.”

Speaking after the crash, Montgomerie said: “I was trapped as the side of the car was compressed and the airbags forced me back, but the passenger door suddenly opened and I was pulled to safety thanks to other drivers who had witnessed the accident.”

Monty, who enjoys driving more then flying by commercial aircraft, had the car replaced with a similar black coloured 750 BMW.

His new car, with its 1CSM license plates, was last seen by www.golfbytourmiss.com driving out the car park at Walton Heath on Tuesday, and after Monty had failed to qualify for the up-coming U.S. Open.
