Rory McIlroy created history on day two of the US Open in becoming the quickest ever player to reach double digit under par figures.
McIlroy moved to 10-under par in spectacular manner when he holed a 113-yard wedge shot that hit the green at the par four eighth some 20-feet behind the hole and spun back into the cup.
The Irishman’s effort eclipsed a 19-year record held by American Gil Morgan.
Morgan created the previous best mark in reaching double digit under par figures after 39 holes of the 1992 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.
Rory McIlroy shares the largest 36-hole lead in U.S. Open history at six strokes. Tiger Woods was set this mark in 2000.
At 22 years, 1 month and 13 days, McIlroy is believed to be the youngest 36-hole leader of the U.S. Open in 97 years. Walter Hagen led the 1914 U.S. Open after the second round at age 21 years, 8 months and 0 days.
McIlroy is performing as though Congressional is his own private golf course with daylight already a distant second.
He commenced the round at six under par and three clear of South African Charl Schwartzel who had come from behind to deny the hapless McIlroy at this year’s U.S. Masters.
However McIlroy is set to bury those Augusta National demons forever should he follow good friend, Graeme McDowell and capture the U.S. Open.
McIlroy was burning up the rain soaked Congressional layout to be six clear of the former U.S. Masters winner, Zach Johnson after just nine holes.
