Doors To Congressional Shut On Ramsay

Scottish golfer Richie Ramsay’s been advised he’s virtually no chance of contesting next week’s U.S. Open at Congressional.

Despite many calls to the USGA by his 4Sports management team it was not till late today when Ramsay was advised of his situation.

Richie Ramsay upbeat after his BMW Italian Open first round of a five under par 67 but the news turned sour for the Scot later in the day.

Swain from the Competitions Department of the USGA said:  “Richie Ramsay’s chances are not very good of playing the U.S. Open.

“He is still the first alternate from the Walton Heath qualifier so one of the 12 who came through qualifying in Surrey would have to withdraw for Ramsay to get in.”

Swain indicated as well, eight to nine exempt would also have to pull out of Congressional in order for the Aberdonian to contest a second U.S. Open.

Ramsay is still planning to head to the States next week but instead will now return to his Alpharetta residence in suburban Atlanta.

Ramsay blew the big chance of qualifying automatically for next week’s U.S. Open by electing to leave the Walton Heath qualifier and try to attend the wedding reception of Tour colleague, Gareth Maybin.

It meant missing out by some 20 minutes in being in a three man play-off for the season’s second Major.

Ramsay arrived gob-smacked and not believing the play off had gone ahead given he had driven from Heathrow Airport in darkness.

However it was Sweden’s Johan Edfors who grabbed the spot and with Dane Andreas Harto being classified as first alternate and Ramsay avoiding disqualification to be second alternate.

However Harto now makes his U.S. Open debut after fellow Dane Anders Hansen withdrew through injury.

And at this stage, American J J Henry is the first alternate.
