Ernie Els Returns Claret Jug.

Defending Open Champion Ernie Els this morning met with R & A CEO, Peter Dawson to return the famed Claret Jug.

Els drove up to the Muirfield clubhouse precisely at 10am to be met by Dawson and just on a year after winning a second Open Championship at Royal Lytham and St. Annes.

“I am very proud and a little sad to be handing back the trophy but things are so and a year’s gone by and I am happy to report the trophy is all in tact, and the jug is in safe hands again with the R & A,” said Els.

“I’ve been please to take the claret jug around the world to America, Europe, Asia and South Africa and the only place it hasn’t been is South America.”

Dawson remarked:  “Hopefully I am just borrowing the trophy from Ernie for four days as the defending champion is always one of the favourites.

“And I for would not be surprised if we were giving it back to Ernie on Sunday but then he’s got some competition so we will have to wait and see.”
