Masters Week – A Time For Dinners

Masters week always brings together officials from the major tours along with representative of golfing unions around the world.

It’s a time for not just watching golf but for meetings and dinners.

Top of the dinner list is the ‘Former Champions Dinner’ this year hosted by defending champion, Phil Mickelson.

The dinner held on Tuesday night was believed to have been very emotional given Mickelson present his fellow Augusta National champions with a Spanish theme meal to honour the ailing Seve Ballesteros.

On the menu was a seafood paella, filet mignon and Spanish apple pie.

At the dinner, double Augusta winning Jose Maria Olazabal delivered an emotional account of how his good friend continues to recover from a brain tumour.

“Jose Maria spoke for five or six minutes and he told us that he had spoken to Seve and that he wanted to tell us that he misses us all,” said Scot Sandy Lyle, the 1988 champion.

“Then Ollie went through a few of his European players and described us.

“He called Ian Woosnam a small man with a big heart and that I was too nice a person!

“It was nice to be among those singled out but the whole evening was very emotional.

“Ray Floyd’s wife isn’t very well at the moment, so she was mentioned while Phil mentioned how much support he and Amy had over the last year or so and said that the former champions are like a family.”

Also on Tuesday night the Europen Tour International Media Dinner was held once again at the Augusta Country Club.

The media dinned on jumbo shrimp cocktail and a superb main course of tenderloin of beef and Maine lobster.

And in keeping with the Spanish theme in the Augusta National clubhouse, the media present at the adjoining Augusta Country Club were served Marques del Riscal Reserve Rioja.

Double Augusta winning Jose Maria Olazabal was a special guest at the dinner joining European Tour CEO, George O’Grady and guests after being present at the ‘Former Champions Dinner’.
