Reed’s Masters Finish Earns Him Exemption Into A 12th Straight PGA Championship

LIV’s Patrick Reed’s superb third place result at the Masters has earned himself exemption into next month’s 12th straight PGA Championship.

And there’s the outside chance the Texan may qualify for all four major championships this year.

Reed teed-up also in a 12th Masters as the World No. 116th ranked golfer and with his effort at Augusta National sending Reed back to the World No. 49 following his share of 33rd place in the 2023 Open Championship.

Reed will now head to Quail Hollow for the May 15th to 18th PGA Championship that is also the final week before the U.S. Open exempts the top 60 in the world, and the year’s third major that Reed made his debut in 2014 and contested every year up to and including 2023.

Then there’s the 153rd Open Championship with the cut-off for the world’s top 50 being on the same May 18 cutoff, though Reed already is eligible from being among the leading three players in the International Series Macau on the Asian Tour, which was part of the qualifying series.

Reed now has four top 10s in the five tournaments he has played outside LIV Golf this year. He tied  10th in Dubai and tied for eighth in Ras Al Khaimah on the European Tour. He was a runner-up in Macau and finished third at the Masters.

Reed ended last year at No. 128.

It was a strong finish at the Masters, including his second shot at the par-4 17th taking one bounce and landing in the bottom of the cup for a remarkable eagle ‘2’.

“The putter. The putter killed me. Killed me this week”, said Reed after his final round of 69. Really lost my opportunity to win a green jacket because of the putter.

“And yeah, I hit it well enough. I felt like I was hitting my putts where I was looking. Even today on the par-5, 13, I felt like I hit a good first putt. Seemed like it wiggled a hair left quickly on me, and when approximate they get that glassy, they can get away from you, and I thought I hit a good second one.

“It was one of those things that the putter cost me this week, but the good thing is, hey, ball-striking is there, and even when I’m not really feeling like I have it all that I need this week, I still had a chance.

“Had an outside chance I felt like going into today, and really, I still had a chance today”.

Prior to the PGA Championship, Reed will make stops in Mexico City (April 25-27) and South Korea (May 2-4) for LIV Golf events.

Thanks, in part, to AP.
