Arise Sir Rory With King Charles Sure To Honour McIlroy With A Knighthood.

Grand Slam winning Rory McIlroy must surely be heading for a knighthood after becoming not only the first British golfer but the first European-born golfer to capture golf’s coveted Grand Slam.

King Charles and Queen Camilla earlier today publicly congratulated McIlroy following the Northern Irishman’s triumph at The Masters to ensure he’s now won all four of the men’s majors.

The Royal statement read: “Congratulations @rorymcilroy on your historic win at @themasters.”

McIlroy had been awarded an MBE by the late Queen Elizabeth in her 2012 New Year’s Honours list for his June 2011 US Open triumph but clearly now will be knighted following his ultra-dramatic achievement at Augusta National.

Not only did McIlroy win a maiden Masters to go with his 2011 US Open, 2012 and 2014 PGA Championship success plus his 2014 Open Championship victory but McIlroy is now only the sixth player to win the Grand Slam – all four of the men’s majors.

He joins Americans Gene Sarazen (1935) and Ben Hogan (1953), South African Gary Player (1965) and the Americans Jack Nicklaus (1966) and Tiger Woods (2000) as the only players in the history of the mens pro game to win all four majors.

McIlroy’s Augusta National triumph comes 10 years, eight months and three days after capturing a second PGA Championship in near darkness at the Valhalla course in surburban Louisville, Kentucky.

And should McIlroy be knighted he will join six-time major winning Nick Faldo and also the late Henry Cotton, and winner of three Open Championships, in being known forever as a ‘Sir’.

Arise Sir Rory!
