Old Tom’s St. Andrews Statue Vandalised For A Second Time.

Old Tom’s statue at St. Andrews has been sadly vandalised for a second time in some three months.

St Andrews-based golf historian Roger McStravick shared the news via his ‘X’ social media indicating he’s lost for words after finding the statue had again been damaged, and on this occasion the full golf club Old Tom was holding has been broken off, just leaving the portion in Old Tom’s hand.

He wrote: “I don’t know what to say. The Tom Morris statue has been damaged again. The club was snapped off and they didn’t leave the club this time.

“If anybody saw anything, please DM. Seems that there was some partying going on. Broken glass near statue etc.”

The Old Tom statue was officially unveiled last October in the week of the Dunhill Links Championship and with double Major winning Scot Sandy Lyle and Old Tom’s grand-daughter Sheila Walker among a huge gathering on Bow Butts, and the mound behind the R & A clubhouse on-hand for the ceremony.

The statue of the four-time Open Championship winner and famed St. Andrews based golf designer was created by David Annand and is believed to have cost around £100,000.

No sooner did we learn news the statue’s initial act of vandalism on November 8th and hundreds began contributing to the repairs including the PGA Tour’s Billy Horschel who was present in St. Andrews for the opening ceremony and a day prior to teeing-up in the Dunhill and having won the BMW PGA Championship the week before.

Horschel said:  “Very sad! Hopefully they are caught and fully punished by the law.”

You can be sure Horschel’s reaction will be same, and that is disgusted like all others, ahead of him teeing-up in the week’s WM Phoenix Open in the US.
