Ferguson’s Neck Injury Woes Continue After Qatar Masters Withdrawal

Past champ Ewen Ferguson’s wretched new season continues with the former champion with a continuing neck injury forcing him to wihdray after just six holes on day one of the CB Qatar Masters in Doha.

Ferguson, 28, was out in the morning half of the draw but was soon on the back foot when he found a fairway bunker down the right side of the 11th hole that he was playing as his second.

A three-putt from the front of the green handed him a bogey ‘5’ ahead of three pars before the obvious discomfort in playing his second shot into the 14th green that was well left from where Ferguson chipped to find then three-putted from 50-feet for a double-bogey ‘6’.

Ferguson went onto his Instagram account to say: “Gutted to have to withdraw from the Qatar Masters due to a neck injury I’ve been dealing with the past month or so.

“Time to rest, recover, and come back stronger. Cye all soon!”

Ferguson is due to contest next fortnight’s Kenya Open commencing on February 20th, so it remains unclear if he will still travel to the African continent

It’s been a difficult time for Ferguson revealing in Dubai he has been working with fellow Scot Dr. Andrew Murray, who is the Tour’s Chief Medical and Scientific Officer on wellness and lifestyle issues.

Feguson, in speaking with the Daily Record, said:  “I have set myself some goals this year but they really are not to do with playing but more to do with my attitude, my lifestyle and such matters.

“I just found that last year I got a bit off track with those issues in my life and they were affecting my golf.

“I’ve been talking with Dr. Andrew Murray who is the Chief Medical and Scientific Officer working out here for the Tour, so he’s been really helpful.

“Andrew is also Scottish, so I’ve chatted with him about my heart-rate along with health and wellness matters, so that I can keep myself more relaxed, more mellow, and not be putting too much pressure on myself”.

After being in contention over the opening two rounds in Dubai, Ferguson has since struggled finishing T6th in Dubai and missing the halfway cut in the following two weeks in both Ras Al Khaimah, Bahrain and withdrawing now in Qatar.

England’s Brandon Robinson-Thompson and Dane Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen lead the field with six-under-par 66s when poor light halted play.

Grant Forrest is best of the three Scots posting a 71 while Richie Ramsay a 72 and Scott Jamieson a 75.

Qatar-based Scottish amateur Dominic McGlinchey, whose father is Director of Golf at the host club, was two-over thru 15 holes when play was halted.

While 13-year-old Russian-born but now Qatar-attached amateur Daniil Sokolov has upstaged in posting a three-over-par 75.

Sokolov, who has already been signed by Modest Golf, who also manage Ferguson, is contesting the opening two rounds alongside past Qatar winners Alvaro Quiros (2009), who posted a 69 and South African Justin Harding (2019), who signed for a similar 75 as the teen.
