The statement said:
“On Christmas Day while preparing dinner, Scottie sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand from a broken glass.
“Small glass fragments remained in the palm which required surgery.
“He has been told that he should be back to 100% in three to four weeks. Unfortunately, he will have to withdraw from The Sentry.
“His next scheduled tournament is the American Express”,
The American Express will take place from January 16th to 19th at La Quinta in eastern California.
Scheffler’s injury, and in the manner we are being informed it happened, closes the book on a remarkable and also bizarre 12 months both on and off the golf course for the American.
Aside from winning a second Masters green jacket there was the incident a month later when he found himself arrested by a clearly overzealous police officer, photographed before being thrown in jail in Louisville, Kentucky ahead of the second round of the PGA Championship. Fortunately, common sense prevailed and Scheffler managed to make his tee time at Valhalla.
He had already won three other regular PGA Tour events prior to the PGA Championship.
Scheffler put that all nonsense of his arrest aside to go on and capture another four tournaments, including the prize FedEx Cup trophy, while he also was awarded a Gold Medal for the lowest score at the Paris Olympics.
He ended his golfing year riding off with an eight stroke success in the Hero World Challenge.
Some year indeed for Scheffler.
