Top Scot Robert MacIntyre produced a golf bag full of emotions in continuing meltdown conditions on day two of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in the UAE capital.
MacIntyre added a second round 68 to his opening 65 and move into a share of 10th place in the $9m event and the penultimate tournament of the Race to Dubai season.
England’s Paul Waring set a new course record, and for a second occasion in his past six events, of an 11-under 61 to grab a five-shot lead at 19-under in continuing heatwave conditions on the Yas Links layout.
His round included an eagle and nine birdies while Waring pared only two of the four par fives.
MacIntyre played the round for a second day running in the company of his 2023 victorious Ryder Cup colleagues in Shane Lowry and Fleetwood and with the Scot and Lowry also in each others compnay for a fifth occasion in their last six events.
This grouping promoted a MacIntyre ‘X’ message: “Don’t worry we are sick of the sight of each other @ShaneLowryGolf #moan ”
Firstly, there was the constant sound of jets taking off from the nearby Abu Dhabi International Airport but just across the road from the host Yas Links course is the Yas Marina Circuit and venue early next month for the season-ending FI World Championship.
However for three days this week – November 8th to 10th – there will be the constant louder sounds as the race circuit hosts the opening race of the new season Yas Racing Series and also a round of the Gulf ProCar Championship.
Not that MacIntyre was bothered by any ‘outside agents’ but moreso his own endeavours in the highs and the lows of a round that included a second hole eagle ‘3’, six birdies but also four clumbsy bogeys.

The Oban golfer was clearly delighted to kick-start his round with an eagle ‘3’ after hitting his 212-yard second shot to just three-feet and just right of the pin. You can hear MacIntyre encouraging his second shot in the video above calling: “Get up. Get up. Get up”
Though his early round joy was short-lived as the Scot three three-putted the next, the par-4 second, from just a little longer than his putt at the prior hole for a bogey ‘5’.
MacIntyre got back on the birdie train with three in the next four holes holing a 10-footer at the fourth, nine feet at six and a near six-footer at the seventh.
There was the flipside of emotions with MacIntyre clearly not chuffed after a second three-putt of his round at the par-3 eighth hole.
For a second day running there was joy with back-to-back birdies at 10 and 11 but there MacIntyre’s patience was again really tested at the par-3 13th. As his ball headed right and towards the waters of the Persian Gulf you could hear him calling:”Oh, my God! Stay up” and with his ball only just managing to stay inbound and not disappear into the drink.
However his frustration completed boiled over when he horribly three-putted from 11-yards, including missing a four-footer third shot that easily missed the hole resulting in a clearly heard use of the F-word that SKY TV ignored issuing any apology.
Then as he walked from the green MacIntyre back-handed his golf ball into the Persian Gulf.
He proceeded to birdie the 16th for a second occasion ahead of a super up-and-down from a bunker at the back of the green for par at the 17th but a bogey at the last, and the fourth of his round, had the Scot certainly in the mood for a long fireside chat.
MacIntyre’s round included 30 putts.
And @BobMacTrack perfectly summed-up MacIntyre’s second round: “He’ll be slightly frustrated with that as he played much better than the score suggests. As he touched on yesterday, a couple of silly mistakes creeping in but still in a nice spot”.
