Gallacher Blows Out The Candles On His 50th Birthday Cake Praising MacIntyre

Birthday boy Stephen Gallacher celebrates the big FIVE ZERO today (November 1st) singling out top-Scot Robert MacIntyre as the new ‘trailblazer’ in Scottish men’s pro golf.

When Gallacher made his DP World Tour debut as a 19-year-old amateur at the 1993 Bells Scottish Open at Gleneagles it was the likes of Colin Montgomerie, Sam Torrance and his uncle Bernard Gallacher who inspired him.

Though as Gallacher now focuses on the next chapter in his golf career and the up-coming Champions Tour Q-School he reflects on the past 30 years and the influence the likes of Monty and Sam had on him but also a delight that in heading to the over-50s game, Scottish men’s golf is in good hands of the likes of MacIntyre, Ewen Ferguson, Grant Forrest, Connor Syme and co

Gallacher said: “Robert’s the trailblazer now for Scottish golf. He’s the one everyone who is taking-up the game will be aiming to follow.

“When I came out on the Tour it was guys like Monty, Sam, Andy Coltart, Gary Orr, Alastair Forsyth, Deano (Dean Robertson) and others but it was Monty who seemed to be winning everything. He was top-50 in the world and he was competing all over the world.

“The good aspect also with Bob is that all the Scottish guys out on the tour are all about the same age and they can relate to what Bob is doing, and say to themselves ‘Why can’t I be as good as Bob?’

“Ewen Ferguson’s had a great year picking-up another win while Connor (Syme) is playing great, as well as Calum Hill, so Scotland has a good crop of similar aged talent.

“Of course, Bob is now playing more in the States and Scottish fans won’t see him as much over here which is only a sign of the times but he’s just a top golfer.  He’s one of the elite”.

After being recently honoured himself by the King with an MBE Gallacher’s delighted to learn MacIntyre’s being nominated in two categories for the up-coming Scottish Sports Awards.

Gallacher said: “It’s great news as it’s been an incredible year for Bob winning both the Canadian and Scottish Open but then how he never won the Scottish a year ago is amazing though Rory (McIlroy) was outrageous and just played unbelievable on the two closing holes.

“So, there were hardly any surprises this year when Bob won the title.  He’s a top, top player and gives a lot back.

“I just think Scottish golf is in great hands, and I see Sandy Scott has got himself onto the KornFerry Tour while there are a lot of young kids in college also playing well.”

So, Stevie?  Give us your 50th birthday golfing wish?

He said: “I’d love to try and win the Senior British Open.  I just want to keep improving, believe it or not.

“I want to continue to improve. I want to have something to work hard for.  I don’t work as hard as I should as I have not been playing all that well.  I don’t like that but now I have a fresh impetus.

“If I get to a level where I can no longer improve I will probably just hang-up the clubs”.

Happy 50th Stevie – We know it will be a good one.
