Ollie Fisher and still the DP World Tour’s only ‘Mr. 59’ will be hoping to make it a third time lucky when he joins just over 300 players teeing-up on four Spanish courses starting Thursday in the second stage of 2025 Tour membership qualifying.
Fisher, who recently turned 36, is contesting second stage at one of four host Spanish courses and with the leading 78 players over the four days to then advance a week later the six-round Final Qualifying stage also in Spain where the leading 25, and hopefully will include Fisher, will earn full 2025 DPWT membership.
In been near on six-years since Fisher put his name into golf’s history books posting a second round 12-under 59 at the Portugal Masters, a feat that no-one has since matched.
He captured his only Tour victory at the 2011 Czech Open while in recent years the affable Englishman has rarely been sighted contesting just two events in the DPWT 2023 season while he’s entered none this year and played in only seven on the secondary Challenge Tour.
Joining Fisher at the Fontanals Golf Club in Girona will be a number of ‘name’ European players included Spanish hero Alvaro Quiros, Frenchman Romain Wattel and Fisher’s fellow countryman in Lee Slattery and Robert Dinwiddie.
Other former top DPWT players including France’s Gregory Bourdy who is competing at the Desert Springs Golf Club at Almería while England’s Tom Lewis and Germany’s Hurly Long are at Canela Links at Huelva.
And featuring at the Golf Las Pinaillas course at Albacete will be Spaniard Alejandro Canizares and the Swedish duo of Rikard Karlberg and Jonas Blixt.
Also, there’s unknown Scot Graeme Robertson competing at Las Pinaillas and having won last week’s Gosling’s Invitational in Bermuda, a victory that earned him not just $11,000 but an invitaton to contest the up-coming Butterfield Bermuda Championship, a $6.9 million event on the PGA Tour.
Though Robertson could very well struggle to tee-up because if gets through this week’s DPWT second stage he qualifies for next week’s torture six-round Final Qualifier that ends on November 13th the day prior to tee-off in Bermuda.
