Wallace Rues Only Second Tour ’59’ Even Contesting DP World Tour C’ship ‘Playing Ball In Hand’

Matt Wallace had tour officials grabbing for the records book after birdieing every one of his closing nine holes, in a blistering score of 60 in grabbing the lead by a shot at 16-under heading to the final round of the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

Wallace, 33, needed just 27 shots over the inward half, however with a ‘preferred lie’ ruling in place for a second day due again to overnight storms, hix posting of a a 10-under tally, and sensationally ending his round with nine straight birdies in succession, officially will not count.

The four-time Tour winner heads into the last day of the last Tour event of the 2023 season, clear of former champ Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland, with each signing for 66s to be sharing second at 15-under.

Despite missing out on two records, including only a second-ever Tour score of 59, Wallace was not dampened by his effort.

Wallace said: “What a day, an amazing day. Just tried my hardest to get myself back into the tournament. I’m really happy that I’ve been able to do that. Played great.

“Again, at the end, I didn’t even think there was a 59. Honestly, I think it helped me a little bit. I just played nicely coming down the stretch, just kept getting one more if I could and I managed to do that.

“Now, I’m kind of gutted now, actually a little bit. I had a great opportunity to shoot 59.  I’ve done it at Moorpark on the West Course which is only a par 68, but to do it out there would have been really special today.

“Of course, with  ball in hand helps. I had a couple good lies for up-and-down, but it was fantastic and a good effort for 59”
