World No. 1 Rory McIlroy sensationally lit the fuse in his quest to end the year as DP World No. 1 finishing birdie, birdie and eagle on day two of the season-ending DP World Tour Championship here in Dubai.

McIlroy emerged from an average round in being level par after 15 holes to birdie both his 16th and 17th holes and then brought the crowd to their feet, sensationally landing his 225-yard second shot to just four-feet at the last for a virtual tap-in eagle ‘3’.

The sizzling finish to his round, in just as sizzling conditions, saw McIlroy jump 12 places and back to a share of 10th on the Race to Dubai standings as the leaders moved into the back nine stages of their rounds on the Earth course.

“I’m not sure where that finish came from but I know, I need to bottle it,” he said.

“The first 33 holes were quite average to say the least.

“Yeah, it was nice to finish with a flourish and at least have some positivity going into the weekend. I obviously got myself a little closer to the leaders.

“The leaders still have nine holes to play. So I don’t know where I’m going to be going into the weekend, but it’s not as far away as it seemed to be about an hour ago. So that’s a good thing.”

It was the third eagle at the last and take nothing away from the ‘3’ recorded by Kiwi Ryan Fox and also Jordan Smith, McIlroy’s was easily the loudest with the crowd gathered around the 18th standing and applauding as McIlroy made his way onto the green

“I got lucky at the last. I was trying to go up the left side of the creek, and I ended up going up the right side,” he said.  “It’s one of those ones, you’re in the middle of it, you might miss it one side or the other. Not a great design of the golf ball, but anyways.”

And in the bigger picture his second round effort is projected to see McIlroy move back to No. 1 on the Race to Dubai ranking, and back on track to end the year as both DP World Tour No. 1 and PGA Tour No. 1
