Bob Mac Bags First PGA Tour Ace But No Car Or Bottle Of Zurich Bubbly

Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre was celebrating a maiden PGA Tour ace on day one of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

MacIntyre is teamed with fellow Scot Martin Laird in the unique format but was initially unaware his ball found the bottom of the cup as there was no crowd reaction from around the green at the par-3 14th hole on the TPC Louisiana course.

MacIntyre is competing in the Stg 6.1m event on an invitation but disappointingly there was no gleaming new car or even a bottle of bubbly, and just the honour on the next tee.

The Tartan duo gelled superbly with an opening six-under-par 66 to be just outside top-10 and trailing England’s Aaron Rai, winner of the 2020 Scottish Open, and his playing partner in American David Lipsky in combining for an 11-under tally.

Aberdeen’s David Law bounced back from a bout of Covid to be the early clubhouse leader on a rain-affected opening round of the inaugural of the ISPS Handa Championship in Spain.

Law, 31, also emerged from a two-hour rain delay to post a bogey-free five-under par 65 on the Lakes course at Infinitum in Tarragona, and just south of Barcelona.

The effort delivered the Aberdonian an effort just one shot off the clubouse lead ahead of fellow Scott Scott Jamieson, and with many in the field yet to complete their rounds given the delay to play.

Law said: “I’m really happy but then I didn’t really know what to expect coming into this week after having four weeks’ off.

“I had Covid the first week I was at home and I’m still not feeling particularly great, but I’m delighted with that start”.

The duo of American Johannes Veerman and Finland’s Tappio Pulkkanen posted six-under 64s to lead the field just prior to darkness halting play.

Nearly 40 players still have to complete round one including the Tour’s ‘March Golfer of the Month’, Ewen Ferguson who was one-over with two to play
