Power Returns From Covid Quarantine To Brilliantly Finish First In Wells Fargo Qualifier

Seamus Power brilliantly returned from a self-quarantine curfew to finish first in a qualifier for this week’s lucrative Wells Fargo Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The West Waterford golfer grabbed six birdies in a bogey-free 62 on the Gaston Country club course and located some 40-minutes from this week’s Euro 7.1m event.

The 34-year-old Power had to sit-out the recent Zurich Classic due to testing positive to Covid-19 on April 20th and returned to competition for a first time Monday with an outward half of 29 to advance as top qualifier by two strokes from American Keenan Huskey.

Power will now tee-up at Quail Hollow and where he has made the cut in his three previous starts, including a tied-13th result in 2019.

The Irishman had entered the secondary Korn Ferry Tour’s Simmons Bank Open in Tennessee but instead now joins fellow Irish Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry in Thursday’s line-up.

Power’s best PGA Tour finish this season is a T-22nd at February’s Puerto Rico Open.

More recently, Power had played himself into Korn Ferry contention ahead of the final round of last month’s MGM Resorts Championship in Las Vegas before a Sunday 74 saw him settle for a top-10.

McIlroy arrived and celebrating his 32nd birthday with his wife and daughter before jetting north to Charlotte and arriving at Quail Hollow where he’s won twice before.

And while it’s now been 549 days since he last celebrated a victory, McIlroy’s returned having won twice before at Quail Hollow.

“It’s always nice coming back to a golf course and an event where you have played really well before, and you have good memories and luckily this week is one of those weeks for me”, he said back in 2018.

“I’ve always enjoyed the golf course and it’s one of those golf courses that sits-up well for me, and suits my eye so that I can play my game around here.

“The course has served me pretty well over the years and hopefully this week is another week for me, and at the start of a pretty good stretch for me.”

Indeed, McIlroy posted a closing round and course Quail Hollow record 62 to win a maiden PGA Tour event in 2010 and five years later he  jumped aboard a second Wells Fargo victory in winning by four shots.
