Hill Claims The Most Bizarre Win Of His Short Pro Career.

With the likes of World No. 1 Rory McIlroy and reigning Masters champ Tiger Woods unable to tee-up in Florida, Scotland’s Calum Hill has claimed a most bizarre sixth pro career at the Verrado Founders Championship on the Outlaw Tour in Arizona.

Hill, 25 first paid a $875 non-members fee to claim success over the three rounds with a 15-under par total and pocket the $4,500 first prize cheque in an eventual field of just 28 players.

The Scot bogeyed his second hole but then eagled the fifth and then birdied three of the next four holes before dropping shots at 10 and 13 but regrouped to birdie 15 and 16 on the par-72 Verrado County Club course in Buckeye and a town to the west of Phoenix.

“His girlfriend (Miranda) is based over there and, as we know, there are some fantastic golf facilities out there, too, which are not currently under lock down,” said Iain Stoddart from Bounce Sports Management.

“So he made the decision that that’s where he wants to be.”

The Outlaw Tour is an extension of the Golden State Golf Tour Association and with the Verrado Championship the 18th of 22 events that began last September and winds-up in the last week of April

Having missed three of four cuts on this year’s European Tour, Hill’s cash prize is just slightly less than the Euro 5,169 he pocketed in sharing 54th place at the Oman Open.

And Hill’s no stranger to victory in the ‘Grand Canyon’ State having won the 2017 Arizona Open by four strokes, and in a 54-hole tournament first played back in 1936.

Arizona is one of a handful of U.S. States where golf is allowed to be played though anti-Coronavirus measures are in place.

The event, and while all golf courses in the UK are closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic, drew worldwide attention earlier in the week when no few than 14 players from the 60-player field were disqualified for playing from a wrong third hole tee-marker.
